How to Repair Tyre Punctures safely According to Australian Safety Standards

Repairing a tyre puncture in Australia should be done in accordance with the Australian Standards. Here are the steps to follow to repair a tyre puncture according to Australian safety standards:

  • Determine the location and size of the puncture. If the puncture is on the sidewall or shoulder of the tire, it cannot be repaired and the tyre must be replaced.
  • Determine the location and size of the puncture. If the puncture is on the sidewall or shoulder of the tire, it cannot be repaired and the tyre must be replaced.
  • Remove the tyre from the wheel and inspect the inside of the tire to make sure there is no damage or foreign objects lodged inside the tire.
  • Insert a repair plug from the inside of the tire, using a suitable plug insertion tool, until it is flush with the surface of the tyre.
  • Trim the excess plug material to be level with the tread surface.
  • Apply a vulcanizing cement to the repair area, and then use a vulcanizing machine to cure the cement, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • After curing, re-inflate the tyre and re-mount it on the wheel.
  • Finally, check the tire pressure and torque the wheel nuts to the manufacturer’s specifications.

It is important to note that not all punctures can be repaired and some tyres may need to be replaced.
